The Pump Dealer · ALPHA2 help

What do you need help with?

Choose the option that best describes why you’re here.

For European/UK ALPHA2 heating circulators. ALPHA2 L, ALPHA2 GO and North American models have different instructions.

    My pump has a problem

Start by photographing the pump label and display. Record any code before changing a setting or restarting the system.

Keep these first checks external. Do not open electrical covers or loosen fittings on a hot, pressurised pump. Leave electrical testing and dismantling to a competent professional. If there is a burning smell, damaged wiring or water near electrical parts, stop using it and arrange an inspection.

    The display is blank

Check whether your heating controls are calling for heat. Note whether the boiler or controller also shows a fault. A blank display alone does not establish that the pump has failed; a professional may need to check its electrical supply.

The display shows an error code

The ALPHA2 instructions linked below list these meanings. Check that those instructions cover the model and revision on your label.

Code Meaning in the linked manual
    E1 Blocked rotor.
    E2 Insufficient supply voltage.
    E3 Electrical fault.
    E4 Dry-running protection.

A code identifies the condition detected. The cause still needs investigating; repeated resets are not a repair.

Read the manufacturer’s fault-finding table (PDF, new tab).

The pump or pipework is noisy

Note whether the sound comes from the pump, valves or pipework, and whether it changes as the heating warms up. Air, excessive flow or inadequate inlet pressure can cause noise; the sound alone is not proof of motor failure.

The pump is on, but the heating is poor

Note which radiators or zones are affected and photograph the current pump setting. A lit display does not confirm adequate circulation. Controls, valves, air, system balance and pump performance may all need checking.

    I need a replacement

Before choosing a replacement, collect these details from the existing pump and installation:

    • Full designation and product number: include every letter and suffix, not just “ALPHA2”.
    • Port-to-port length and connections: confirm the dimensions and existing fittings.
    • Application: heating, hot-water circulation or a pump built into an appliance.
    • Performance and controls: establish the required flow/head and any appliance control requirements.

A similar name or physical appearance is not enough to confirm compatibility. The product number helps distinguish variants that look alike.

Open Grundfos Product Center (new tab) to find the existing product’s information. Ask the installer to verify the proposed replacement against the system and appliance requirements.

    Specifications or settings

    Read the complete label

Keep the full type designation, product number, model letter and production code together. Different ALPHA2 revisions can have different functions.

    Understand the control modes

    Mode What it does
AUTOADAPT Automatically adjusts pump performance within its operating range.
Proportional pressure Changes the pressure target as flow demand changes.
Constant pressure Aims to maintain the selected differential pressure.
Fixed speed I / II / III Runs on a selected speed curve.

The appropriate setting depends on the circuit and pump version. Follow the applicable pump and appliance instructions, and record the original setting before making any change.
