    Frequently Asked Questions

What is this pump used for?

This Grundfos CM 1-6 is used for clean-water transfer, pressure boosting, washing, water treatment, temperature control and compatible industrial circulation duties. It is a compact horizontal multistage pump designed to produce a higher head from a relatively small flow rate.

    What does CM mean?

CM stands for Grundfos’ compact horizontal multistage pump range. CM pumps are close-coupled pumps with a standard mains-operated motor and a mechanical shaft seal. They are designed for clean-liquid duties where compact size, quiet operation and reliable pressure performance are required.

    What does CM 1-6 mean?

In the Grundfos model code, 1 refers to the rated flow family at 50Hz, and 6 indicates the number of impellers / hydraulic stages. This version is a six-stage CM 1 pump, giving a rated duty point of approximately 1.7 m³/h at 36.3 m head.

    What does A-R-G-E-AQQE mean?

    • A – basic pump version
    • R – Whitworth threaded Rp pipe connection
    • G – stainless steel wetted construction, EN 1.4401 / AISI 316
    • E – EPDM rubber parts in the pump, excluding neck ring and shaft seal
    • AQQE – mechanical shaft seal code

    What does C-A-A-N mean?

    • C – single-phase 220–240V, 50Hz supply version
    • A – standard motor, IP55
    • A – prepared for cable glands
    • N – no sensor

What is the AQQE shaft seal?

AQQE is the Grundfos shaft seal code. It indicates an O-ring mechanical shaft seal with fixed seal driver, silicon carbide / silicon carbide seal faces and EPDM secondary elastomers.

The silicon carbide / silicon carbide face pairing gives good wear resistance in compatible clean-liquid duties. EPDM is well suited to many water-based applications and hot-water duties, but it is not suitable for mineral oils or fuel-related liquids.

What is the difference between CM-I and CM-G?

Grundfos CM-I pumps use stainless steel EN 1.4301 / AISI 304 wetted parts. This pump is the CM-G version, which uses stainless steel EN 1.4401 / AISI 316 wetted parts. AISI 316 offers improved corrosion resistance compared with AISI 304 in selected compatible duties.

    What voltage is this pump?

    This pump is a single-phase 220–240V, 50Hz pump. For UK supplies, it is normally listed as a 230V / 240V single-phase pump.

Does the motor need overload protection?

The motor has built-in thermal protection / TP211. The product documentation states that the motor has built-in thermal protection and requires no further motor protection. Because the protection includes automatic reset, the installation must be arranged so that automatic restart cannot create a hazard during servicing or fault conditions.

What flow and pressure does this pump produce?

The listed rated duty point is 1.7 m³/h at 36.3 m head. Actual performance depends on the installed pipework, system resistance, inlet pressure and operating point on the pump curve.

What pipe connections does this pump have?

This pump has threaded Rp pipe connections to ISO 7/1. Both the suction and discharge connections are Rp 1. It is not a flanged pump.

    Is this pump self-priming?

No. This is a normal-suction CM pump, not a CM self-priming version. The pump must be correctly flooded or primed before operation and must not be run dry.

What liquids is this pump suitable for?

This pump is suitable for clean, thin, non-aggressive and non-explosive liquids compatible with stainless steel EN 1.4401 / AISI 316, EPDM elastomers and the AQQE mechanical shaft seal.

Typical suitable duties include clean water, treated water and compatible water-based process liquids. Liquids with a viscosity or density different from water can affect pump performance and motor load, so the duty should be checked before use.

Can this pump handle dirty water or solids?

No. This is a clean-liquid multistage centrifugal pump. It is not designed for dirty water, wastewater, sewage, sludge, fibres or liquids containing abrasive solids. Particles can damage the hydraulic stages and mechanical shaft seal.

Is this suitable for potable water?

The product documentation shows WRAS and ACS approvals for this pump. Final suitability for potable water still depends on the full installation, water quality, local regulations and any site-specific requirements.

Is this suitable for hot water?

Grundfos lists a liquid temperature range of -20°C to +120°C for this product. The specification also lists maximum pressure at stated temperature as 10 bar at 120°C and 16 bar at 90°C. Hot-water suitability depends on the liquid, pressure, water quality, seal condition and installation conditions.

    Is this suitable for glycol?

The AQQE seal uses EPDM elastomers and silicon carbide / silicon carbide seal faces, which may be suitable for selected water-glycol duties. Glycol type, concentration, viscosity, temperature and inhibitor package can affect pump performance and seal life, so the exact duty should be checked before use.

Is this suitable for oils or fuels?

Not as a standard configuration. This pump is fitted with an AQQE mechanical shaft seal using silicon carbide / silicon carbide seal faces and EPDM elastomers. EPDM is generally selected for water-based duties rather than mineral oils or fuel-related liquids.

For mineral oil, diesel, petrol, fuel oil or similar hydrocarbon duties, the exact liquid, temperature, viscosity, pressure and seal compatibility must be checked. A different seal and elastomer selection would normally be required for oil or fuel applications.

Can this be used as a pressure boosting pump?

Yes, subject to correct sizing and system design. CM pumps are commonly used for pressure boosting and water transfer duties. The pump should be selected against the required flow, head, inlet pressure, available NPSH and control arrangement.

Can this pump be used with a variable-speed drive?

This is a fixed-speed CM pump with a standard mains-operated motor, not a CME pump with an integrated frequency converter. If external variable-speed control is required, the motor and installation should be checked for inverter suitability before use.

How should this pump be installed?

The pump should be installed on a level surface and fixed so that it cannot move during starting or operation. It should be installed so that air pockets are avoided in the pump housing and pipework, with suitable access for inspection, maintenance and service.

What should I check before ordering?

    • Product number: 97516642
    • Model: CM 1-6 A-R-G-E-AQQE C-A-A-N
    • Electrical supply: single-phase 220–240V / 230V / 240V class
