    Frequently Asked Questions

What does the model number mean?

    • MAGNA3 – Grundfos advanced high-efficiency circulator range
    • 40 – nominal diameter of inlet and outlet ports, DN40
    • 180 – maximum head class, 180 dm / approximately 18 m
    • F – flanged connection
    • Model B – MAGNA3 model version shown on the pump nameplate

What connection does this pump have?

This pump has DN40 flanged connections with a 250 mm port-to-port length. Please check the flange size, pressure rating and pipework gap against your existing pump before ordering.

What control modes are available on MAGNA3 Model B?

MAGNA3 Model B offers advanced onboard control and commissioning functions. Available control modes include:

    • AUTOADAPT – factory setting, suitable for many heating systems
    • FLOWADAPT – combines AUTOADAPT with FLOWLIMIT
    • Proportional pressure
    • Constant pressure
    • Constant temperature
    • Differential temperature
    • Constant curve
    • Minimum or maximum curve duty

The correct mode should be selected during commissioning to match the system duty, valve arrangement, sensor setup and energy-saving requirements.

    What does Model B add?

This pump is from the MAGNA3 Model B range. Compared with earlier Model A units, Model B includes the expanded MAGNA3 function set shown in the Model A-B-C data booklet, including differential-temperature control, heat energy monitor, operating log, external sensor input, Grundfos GO communication, CIM/BMS communication options and multipump functionality.

Why choose MAGNA3 instead of MAGNA1?

MAGNA3 is generally chosen where more advanced control, monitoring and communication functions are required. Compared with MAGNA1, MAGNA3 offers a more capable display/interface and additional functions such as AUTOADAPT, FLOWADAPT, FLOWLIMIT, heat energy monitoring, operating history and broader communication options.

MAGNA1 is usually the simpler, lower-cost option for straightforward duties. MAGNA3 is better where commissioning flexibility, system feedback and advanced control are useful.

Is this suitable to replace other DN40 circulators?

This model uses DN40 flanged connections with a 250 mm port-to-port length. Where dimensions and duty are comparable, it can replace other DN40 in-line circulators from brands such as Wilo, Lowara and KSB, subject to hydraulic duty, flange standard, electrical supply and control compatibility.

The advantage of an electronically controlled circulator is that it can often be adjusted during commissioning to better match the required duty of the pump being replaced, rather than being locked to one fixed-speed curve.

What liquids can this pump be used with?

MAGNA3 is suitable for thin, clean, non-aggressive liquids that do not contain solid particles or fibres. Typical uses include heating water, chilled water and clean circulation duties.

Water/glycol mixtures may be used up to 50%, but glycol concentration and temperature affect viscosity, performance and pump selection. The system should be cleaned and flushed before glycol is added, and the glycol mixture should be maintained according to the supplier’s instructions.

    Not suitable for:

    • Liquids containing solid particles or fibres
    • Flammable, combustible or explosive liquids
    • Oils or aggressive chemicals
    • Sea water or aggressive saline solutions
    • Dirty water, wastewater or drainage applications

Can this be used on domestic hot-water systems?

MAGNA3 pumps are listed by Grundfos for domestic hot-water systems, but suitability depends on water quality, temperature, local regulations and pump housing material. This pump is the cast iron housing version, not the stainless-steel N version. For domestic hot-water applications, Grundfos strongly recommends stainless-steel pumps to reduce corrosion risk.

Grundfos also recommends using MAGNA3 pumps in domestic hot-water systems only where water hardness is below approximately 14 °dH, and keeping the liquid temperature below 65 °C to reduce the risk of lime precipitation. Please check the full system requirements before ordering.

What minimum inlet pressure is required?

The required minimum inlet pressure depends on liquid temperature. For this pump family, the relevant guidance is:

    • 75 °C: 0.10 bar
    • 95 °C: 0.50 bar
    • 110 °C: 1.00 bar

The inlet pressure and system pressure should always be checked against the installed duty, liquid temperature and manufacturer documentation before commissioning.

Does this pump have a mechanical shaft seal?

No. MAGNA3 is a canned-rotor circulator, meaning the pump and motor form an integrated wet-rotor unit without a conventional mechanical shaft seal.

Can this pump be controlled or monitored externally?

Yes. MAGNA3 supports advanced monitoring and control options, including Grundfos GO and communication via suitable CIM modules or accessories where required. Please check the required control functions against your system before ordering.

    Is this a new pump?

This listing is for as new surplus stock. The unit has not been installed or used but may show cosmetic marks from storage and handling.
