    Connection & Installation Notes

    • DN150 flanged outlet: this pump has a DN150 discharge flange, allowing connection to compatible DN150 pipework, fittings or installation accessories, subject to matching flange standard and site arrangement.
    • The DIN flanged outlet gives flexibility when replacing pumps from other manufacturers, as a suitable DN150 guide claw or adaptor may be used to connect the pump to compatible existing guide-rail systems. Please confirm flange drilling, guide-rail arrangement and base elbow dimensions before purchase.
    • The SL1 / SLV range is suitable for submerged installation on auto-coupling systems or submerged free-standing installation, depending on the site arrangement and accessories used.
    • Ordered accessories are normally supplied separately and are not factory-fitted unless specifically stated.

    Applications & Selection Guidance

Grundfos provides a selection table intended as guidance when choosing between SL1 (S tube®) and SLV (SuperVortex). Selection should be based on the pumped liquid, dry solids content, fibre loading, operating hours and site conditions.

    • Dry solids content: up to 3% – SL1 or SLV may be suitable; above this, up to 5%, guidance points to SLV
    • Fibre / solids content: relatively low fibre and solids content – SL1 or SLV; relatively high fibre and solids content – SLV is typically preferred
    • Wastewater with long fibres, e.g. laundries: both SL1 and SLV are shown as suitable in the guidance table

Typical duties shown as suitable for SL1 include:

    • Stormwater and groundwater
    • Drainage and surface water
    • Drainage and surface water with small impurities
    • Abrasive surface water
    • Wastewater with long fibres, e.g. laundries
    • Domestic wastewater including discharge from toilets
    • Municipal sewage
    • Sewage from commercial buildings
    • Industrial process water with solids
    • Industrial process water without solids and fibres

    Construction & Protection Features

    • S tube® impeller: channel-style wastewater hydraulic designed to combine efficiency with free passage
    • Double mechanical cartridge shaft seal: service-oriented cartridge design
    • Thermal protection: thermal switches in the stator windings to protect against overheating
    • Leakage monitoring: moisture switch in the motor chamber for detection of water ingress
    • Moisture-proof cable plug: stainless steel cable plug connection with sealing protection
    • Clamp construction: stainless steel clamp connection between motor housing and pump housing for easier service access

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What does SL1.100.150.40.EX.4.50D.C.Z mean?

    • SL – Grundfos sewage / wastewater pump range
    • 1 – S tube® impeller
    • 100 – 100 mm free spherical passage
    • 150 – DN150 pump outlet
    • 40 – 4.0 kW motor output
    • EX – explosion-proof pump version
    • 4 – 4-pole motor
    • 5 – 50 Hz
    • 0D – 3 × 380–415 V, DOL starting
    • C – 4th generation
    • Z – custom-built pump

What is the maximum solids size?

This pump has a 100 mm free spherical passage, which corresponds to the stated maximum solids size for this model.

What discharge connection does this pump have?

This model has a DN150 flanged outlet. This gives flexibility for connecting compatible DN150 pipework, fittings or installation accessories, subject to matching flange standard and site arrangement.

Can this replace another manufacturer’s pump?

In many cases, a DIN flanged wastewater pump can be adapted to suit existing installations using the relevant DN150 guide claw, base elbow or pipework adaptor. Compatibility depends on the existing guide-rail system, flange drilling, discharge centreline and installation dimensions, so please send photos or measurements before purchase if you are unsure.

Why choose S tube® (SL1) instead of a vortex pump?

The SL1 S tube® hydraulic is typically selected where a balance of energy efficiency and solids handling is required. An S-tube / channel-style hydraulic guides the flow through a defined passage, which can provide higher hydraulic efficiency compared with a vortex design, where a larger proportion of energy is used to create a free-flow vortex in the casing.

In general, SL1 is often chosen for regular wastewater duties where efficiency and stable performance are important. SLV / vortex is often selected where maximum clog tolerance is the priority, particularly with elevated fibre or solids loading.

Can this pump handle wastewater with long fibres?

Yes. The Grundfos selection table shows wastewater with long fibres, such as laundry wastewater, as a suitable application for both SL1 and SLV. Final selection should still be based on the full duty point and site conditions.

Does this pump include motor protection and leakage monitoring?

Yes. The standard package includes thermal protection in the stator windings and a moisture switch in the motor chamber. These should be connected to suitable monitoring and control equipment in accordance with the installation requirements.

Does EX mean this pump needs special installation?

Yes. This is an explosion-proof version and must be installed, controlled and protected according to the relevant Grundfos instructions and site hazardous-area requirements. The manufacturer operating note states that explosion-proof pumps must be fully submerged during operation.

    Do accessories come fitted?

Ordered accessories are normally supplied separately and are not factory-fitted unless specifically stated.

    Do you offer technical support?

Yes — we can help confirm compatibility with pipework, discharge fittings, installation arrangement and control gear. Call 01803 220416 for advice before purchase.
