    Frequently Asked Questions

What is this pump used for?

This Grundfos TP 40-120/2 is used for clean-water circulation in heating, cooling, air-conditioning and compatible industrial circulation systems. It is a single-stage in-line pump with DN40 suction and discharge ports, designed for installation directly into matching pipework.

    What does TP mean?

TP is Grundfos’ dry-rotor in-line centrifugal pump range. TP pumps are single-stage, close-coupled pumps with a mechanical shaft seal and separate motor/pump construction.

    What does 40-120/2 mean?

In the Grundfos model code, 40 refers to the nominal DN40 inlet and outlet connection size. 120 is the nominal maximum head reference in decimetres, equal to approximately 12 metres. The /2 indicates a 2-pole motor speed version.

    What does A-F-A-BUBE mean?

    • A – basic pump version
    • F – DIN flanged pipe connection
    • A – standard material version
    • BUBE – mechanical shaft seal code

What is the BUBE shaft seal?

BUBE is the Grundfos mechanical shaft seal code fitted to this pump. It identifies a rubber bellows shaft seal with a tungsten carbide rotating seal face, a carbon graphite resin-impregnated stationary seat and EPDM secondary elastomers.

This is a practical clean-water circulation seal. The tungsten carbide face provides good wear resistance, while the carbon graphite seat gives favourable running and lubrication behaviour in clean-water applications.

    Why choose a BUBE seal?

A BUBE seal is a good standard choice for clean heating and cooling water duties where the pumped liquid is compatible with EPDM and the pump is operating within its stated temperature and pressure limits.

Compared with hard/hard seal pairings such as silicon carbide / silicon carbide, the carbon graphite seat can give good behaviour in clean water. However, BUBE is less tolerant of dirty liquids, solids, crystallisation and additive deposits, because particles can become embedded in the carbon face and increase wear.

What temperature range can this pump operate at?

For this product number, Grundfos lists a liquid temperature range of 0°C to +140°C. Actual suitability still depends on the pumped liquid, system pressure, water quality, seal condition and installation conditions.

What pressure can this pump handle?

The pump has PN6/10 DIN flanged connections and a listed maximum operating pressure of 10 bar. The installed system pressure and temperature must remain within the pump and flange limits.

What liquids is this pump suitable for?

This pump is suitable for thin, clean, non-aggressive and non-flammable liquids that do not contain solid particles or fibres which could attack the pump mechanically or chemically.

    Typical suitable duties include:

    • Clean heating system water
    • Clean cooling water
    • Air-conditioning circulation water
    • Hot-water circulation duties, subject to temperature, material and system suitability
    • Softened water, subject to water quality and system conditions
    • Compatible clean industrial circulation liquids

Can this pump handle dirty water or wastewater?

No. This is a clean-water circulation pump. It is not designed for dirty water, sewage, wastewater, sludge, solids, fibres or drainage applications. Solids and deposits can damage the mechanical shaft seal, especially the carbon graphite seal face.

    Is this suitable for glycol?

This pump is fitted with a BUBE shaft seal, so it should not be advertised as the preferred option for glycol or antifreeze mixtures. Grundfos states that where glycol or another antifreeze agent is added to the pumped liquid, the pump must have a BQQE or DQQE shaft seal.

If the system contains glycol, inhibitors or antifreeze additives, check the exact concentration, temperature and pump duty before use. A BQQE or DQQE version may be more suitable for many glycol-based heating or cooling systems.

Is this suitable for mineral oils?

No, not as a standard assumption. The fitted BUBE seal uses EPDM secondary seals, and EPDM is not suitable for mineral oils or fuel-related liquids. For oil or fuel duties, a different seal and elastomer selection would normally be required.

What are the limitations of the BUBE seal?

    • Not intended for dirty water, wastewater, sludge, solids or fibres.
    • Not suitable for mineral oils or fuel-related liquids as a standard EPDM seal configuration.
    • Not the preferred Grundfos seal choice for glycol or antifreeze mixtures.
    • Carbon graphite seal faces can suffer accelerated wear if particles, crystallised additives or deposits enter the seal gap.
    • The pump must not be run dry; mechanical shaft seals rely on a thin lubricating film between the seal faces.

Is this suitable for potable water?

This is a cast-iron in-line circulator and is not normally selected for potable domestic hot-water duties. For potable water applications, pump material, water quality, temperature, system design and local regulations must be checked carefully. Stainless-steel or bronze versions are usually preferred where potable-water compatibility is required.

    Is this a variable-speed pump?

No. This is a fixed-speed TP pump, not a TPE electronically controlled version. Any external speed control or system control would need to be considered separately and must be compatible with the motor.

Will this replace my existing DN40 TP pump?

This pump has DN40 DIN flanged connections, PN6/10 flange rating, a 250 mm port-to-port length and a single-phase 220–230/240V 50Hz motor. It may be a suitable replacement for matching Grundfos TP 40-120/2 installations, but the product number, flange standard, port-to-port length, voltage, shaft seal and duty point should be checked before ordering.

What electrical supply does it need?

This pump is a single-phase 50Hz unit with a rated voltage of 1 × 220–230/240V. Electrical installation should be carried out by a qualified person using suitable protection and isolation.

Does the motor need separate overload protection?

The motor has built-in thermal protection. The manufacturer notes that automatic reset must be considered during installation so that the motor cannot restart in a way that could cause risk during servicing or fault conditions.
