    Frequently Asked Questions

What does the model number mean?

    • UPS – Grundfos three-speed glandless circulator range
    • 50 – nominal connection size, DN50
    • 60 – maximum head class, approximately 6 m
    • /4 – 4-pole motor version
    • F – flanged connection
    • B – bronze pump housing
    • 280 – port-to-port length in millimetres

What connection does this pump have?

This pump has DN50 PN6/10 DIN flanged connections with a 280 mm port-to-port length. Please check the flange size, pressure rating and pipework gap against your existing pump before ordering.

Is this suitable to replace another DN50 bronze circulator?

Yes, where the existing pump has matching DN50 PN6/10 flanges, a 280 mm port-to-port length, compatible electrical supply and a suitable duty point. It may replace similar bronze-bodied circulators from Grundfos or other manufacturers, subject to hydraulic duty and site configuration.

    Why choose the bronze version?

The bronze pump housing is used where corrosion resistance or water compatibility is required, particularly in hot-water recirculation applications. Cast iron circulators are normally used for closed heating systems, while bronze versions are typically selected where the circulated water is domestic hot water or where a non-ferrous housing is specified.

    Is this a variable-speed pump?

No. This is a traditional three-speed UPS circulator. The installer selects one of three fixed speed settings to suit the duty. It is not an electronically variable-speed MAGNA-style circulator.

What liquids can this pump be used with?

This pump is intended for clean, non-aggressive water-based circulation duties. It is commonly used for hot-water recirculation and clean building-services circulation where the system materials, temperature and water quality are suitable.

    Not suitable for:

    • Dirty water, wastewater or drainage applications
    • Liquids containing solids or fibres
    • Flammable liquids
    • Oils or aggressive chemicals
    • Applications outside the pump’s temperature, pressure or material limits

Does this pump have a mechanical shaft seal?

No. This is a glandless canned-rotor circulator, so the pump and motor form an integrated wet-rotor unit with no conventional mechanical shaft seal.

Why would I use this pump instead of a modern high-efficiency replacement?

A modern high-efficiency circulator may be the best option where the whole system is being upgraded, but this original-style UPS pump can make sense where the existing installation is already set up for a 3-phase 400–415V circulator. Many modern high-efficiency replacements are single-phase 230V, so using a like-for-like 3-phase UPS can avoid changing the electrical supply, controls or wiring arrangement.

Older Grundfos UPS catalogue data for the UPS 50-60 F 280 family gives low minimum inlet-pressure requirements: 0.05 bar at 75 °C, 0.35 bar at 90 °C and 1.65 bar at 120 °C. This can be useful when replacing an existing pump in an older hot-water circulation system, especially where the system was originally designed around this UPS pump style. Any modern replacement should still be checked against its own minimum inlet pressure / NPSH requirement before substitution.
