What liquids is this suitable for?

It may be suitable for some glycol duties, but this should not be assumed without checking the exact glycol type, concentration, inhibitor package, temperature and pressure. Glycol can increase viscosity, affect lubrication at the seal faces and alter pump performance.

Can a mechanical shaft seal run dry?

No. Mechanical shaft seals for liquids rely on a thin lubricating film between the seal faces. Running the pump dry, or without proper liquid at the seal faces, can quickly damage the seal.
